Frequently Asked Questions:

( I made these questions up )

Q: Are you sure this will work for me?
Effort does not return void! You will surprise yourself for sure with effort; look up 'Spaced repetition'. If you have a will to learn, you will succeed!

Q: Mnemonics help learn Kanji, right?
Use any method available. Mnemonics serve to connect what you don't know ( Kanji ) to something you do know; you are learning a language, consider mnemonics another tool in learning Kanji and its meanings. The Kanji itself (sometimes) has meaning that you can use, eventually you will intuitively know or have an idea of meanings and even readings of a Kanji. When you have trouble, please make up a mnemonic. There are mnemonics scattered throughout ILearnedKanji Kanji-Quiz, especially later (1000+) in the dictionaries.

If you have trouble thinking of a picture or story, try posting on the About page and we may be able to help. There are many websites that are dedicated to this kind of thing though.

Q: How do I learn Kanji using this site?
Check the How To Use link, but here's the long-hand. Import a dictionary: 'File->Import'; Choose either JLPT4 or GRADE1 for a dictionary. The goal is to learn this dictionary and then move to the next one in sequence.

From main menu, select 'Kanji Review,' it will automatically create a quiz simply by selecting it and hitting 'create quiz' button. This mode is almost identical to 'Kanji Test,' but there is no penalty for wrong answers. Use this to prepare for 'Kanji Test.'

After you are confident, Use 'Kanji Test.' After completing, take a break. There is no more for you to do right now; well, you could look at your statistics. On main menu select View->View Statistics.

It is not beneficial to do more than one test per session ( Unless you already knew the Kanji being presented ). It will be difficult the next session you test, because you'll have 5 relatively new Kanji + 5 new Kanji to remember + whatever more you tested over!

Q: Learning Kanji is hard!
Not a question, but yes, there is no argument there. We give you the tools to do the hard work. Kanji meanings you will learn by exposure. The On-Yomi and Kun-Yomi are a different animal. It helps to look at the Compounds and find at least one that incorporates the On-Yomi. This won't always work, but it is a big help. As for the Kun-Yomi, we supply the definitions and they will have meanings on their own. This is vocabulary that adds to the Kanji you learn. Every Kanji gives you many words and conjugations. It is inevitable you will forget some readings, however you will find you can recall more than you thought possible!

Q: The quiz is broken, it won't give me any new Kanji! What gives?
A few things to note:

You need to test yourself over Kanji using 'Kanji Quiz' to start receiving new Kanji.

If you are constantly answering incorrectly using this mode, the quizer will deem you not ready to receive new Kanji.

Needless to say, the quickest way to progress is by making a 100% on every 'Kanji Test'.

After completing a 'Kanji Quiz', you MUST click the 'Finish Quiz' Button!! If you do not, your quiz will NOT be recorded.

Also, DO NOT attempt using quiz type 'Kanji Test' if you are not confident you can pass with a good percentage correct. Of course, don't be scared of using 'Kanji Test,' you will miss some from time to time. This is natural; you will have another chance to get it right the first time on the next 'Kanji Test.'

Q: What is that 'Status: ' text next to the 'Offset?' box for?
That is your progress displayed as:
'NUMBER KANJI REVIEWED / NUMBER KANJI MASTERED'
You add to the number reviewed when you encounter a new Kanji in 'Kanji Test' option.
You Master a Kanji by faithfully answering it correctly. This will change when you answer one incorrectly.

Q: I want to take 'Kanji Test' more than 3 times a day, is that cool?
While it is possible, it is not recommended. However, you may be a special case who can learn at a crazy accelerated pace, which is okay. The ILearnedKanji Kanji-Quiz will accommodate you and will not allow you to continue unless you have proven you are ready.

Q: I'm getting burnt out learning Kanji, is there something I can do?
Try taking a break!
Yes, rest is important in the learning process also. When you return (hopefully it won't be too long!), try using the 'Kanji Cards' quiz type and selecting ALL Kanji that you have already been quizzed over. Complete this quiz (It will take some time), but it is good to refresh yourself before getting back to the 'Review Quiz' and 'Kanji Quiz'; Otherwise, you may find you are missing more Kanji that you have already 'Mastered.'
In fact, you may find light exercise in the morning to be beneficial to your studies also; No, Really!

Q: What's the deal with such a stringent password?!
It may inconvenience the masses, still, we want to instill good password habits that may even encourage using a random password generator. At the very least, your login credentials will be less susceptible to attack; This should keep you at ease in regards to your personal information and your quizzing sessions not being compromised. Your weakest link is then going to be your personal email account credentials.

Q: Why do you ask for my name and other information?
Presumably, it will be for your benefit later. We plan to use the information as statistics only. You will be able to see statistics and maybe a forum will be set up so you can challenge and help others using this service.
We will NEVER disclose your personal information, unless forced to by law.

Q: How can I submit feedback/questions?
You may post comments after logged in and may also submit comments on the About Page anonymously.
